You will need one of the following licenses that is valid in Japan, in addition to your passport.
1. If you have an international driving license
You must possess a valid international driving license issued under the Convention on Road Traffic, Geneva, 19 September 1949 and shall be entitled to drive within one year after the day of arriving in Japan OR until the expiration date of the said driving license, whichever comes earlier. However, if a person who is recorded in the Basic Resident Register in Japan, re-enters Japan within less than three months after leaving Japan, his / her re-entry date will not be considered as his / her start date for driving in Japan.
※You cannot drive in Japan with other international driving licenses based on Vienna Convention, etc., except for the above license.
※When driving a large vehicle accommodating more than 10 passengers, a permit stamp is required on class D of the vehicle license classes.
2. If you have a foreign driver's license with a Japanese translation document
If you have a driving license issued in the following seven countries and areas: Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, or Monaco, you can drive in Japan for one year after your arrival with your original driving license accompanied by its Japanese translation document, OR until the expiration date of the said driving license, whichever comes earlier. If a person who is recorded in the Basic Resident Register in Japan, re-enters Japan within less than three months after leaving Japan, his / her re-entry date will not be considered as his / her start date for driving in Japan.

Cancellation fees are capped at ¥6,600 maximum.
